Sewing Table, circa 1820 A Chinese Export sewing table made of Asian softwood, the surface decorated with gilt designs on a black laquer surface. Form based on European example. The oblong hinged top has rounded corners and incurvate sides. There is a channeled edge between each of these sections. Each section has a small raised conforming top panel. In the center there is a stepping oblong panel with inverted corners. The interior of the lid has a recessed oval panel. The interior has removable square tray flanked by a pair of deep narrow compartments. They have fitted covers with a ivory pull. The tray has sixteen fitted compartments, three have removable oblong trays, two have fitted covers with ivory pulls, three are fitted with applied channeled blocks, six have fitted carved ivory screens, and the largest compartment contains an ivory reel that can hold seven spools of thread. The tray also has thirty assorted carved ivory sewing implements. The cushion molded case has rounded corners, a medial drawer and a sliding fabric bag. The drawer is fitted with six compartments. One has a hinged writing board covered in red velvet, another has a removable pen tray and the rest are plain. The drawer and the lid both have diamond-shaped escutcheons and brass locks. The two lyre-shaped legs have a fleur-de-lis in the center and are supported by carved paw feet. There is a single turned stretch between the legs. |
