Description |
Document Box, circa 1790 An American two-part pig skin (or deer hide) domed document box with a leather hinged lid. The oblong wooden box has light brown leather strips applied along the sides, lid, and opening top edges. They are held in place by brass dome headed tacks. The front has an applied brass oblong escutcheon plate with a key hole cover stamped with an eagle. The opening edge around the lid has a horizontal overhanging matchng scalloped-edged leather flap with tacks. The lid has a medial brass bail handle. The unfinished base is flat and carved with the owner's name "R. HEARD". The interior is lined with a blue and white star pattern wall paper. |
