Description |
Evening Gown, circa 1910 An ecru Battenburg lace evening gown with a beige satin underdress highlighted by fuschia colored velvet. There is a v-shaped neck and back both edged in velvet. At the Empire waist there is an applied velvet belt. In the front cascading lace from the bodice is stitched to the belt. In the rear there is an open oblong velvet buckle with concealed hook and eye closures. The lace is scalloped at the hem and there is an integral train. The unlined short sleeves have velvet edging on the cuffs. The opening is at the rear with hook and eye closures. There is a rear lace sash backed in velvet. The lace is arranged in vertical stripes with lace ribbon overlapping the different sections. The gown was worn by Henrietta Farrington Upton when teaching some of her classes in ballroom dancing at Hamilton Hall, Salem. She was the daughter of Henry O. and Elizabeth Upton and grew up in the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion. |
