Description |
Bed, circa 1860 A circa 1860 Continental bed, black and gold lacquered over a red undercoat, single bed decorated in the chinoiserie style. The matching head and foot boards are of equal height. The block-and-turned posts have acorn-shaped finials and baluster turned feet. The crest rail is ring-and-baluster turned with block terminals. There is a wide lower oblong head and foot board with an applied rounded overhanging cap. The footboard is decorated with three islands. On the first island there is an angular fence with various foliage. The center island has an oriental female pushing a ricksaw containing a male and a pot. The third island contains two pagodas with trees and shrubbery. The headboard contains a cluster of flowers, fruits and trailing ferns, a large crane in flight and outlines or other birds. The side rails are painted red over black and have cast iron ends stamped "ASHMORE A 3 PATENT." Pair to 93.2.4. |
