Description |
Document Box, circa 1800 A late 18th-early 19th century two-part deerhide covered, slightly domed document box with a leather hinged lide. The oblong wooden box is embellished with four verticle dark brown leather strips held in place by circular brass domed tracks. The opening edge around the lift has a horizontal overhanging matching scalloped edged leather flap with tacks. The lid has a medial brass bail handle. The front has and applied black painted iron hasp, and escutcheon plate. The lower front corners are reinforced by a quarter round piece of leather. The base is flat and unfinished. The interior is lined in blue paper. |
