Description |
Sweetmeat Compote, circa 1780 A late eighteenth century white tin-glazed, two-part sweetmeat compote, with fitted lid (b) and maroon-colored painted decoration. Probably European. The compote has a square base (a), rounded stem, ovoid main body and squat linear band at the base, a single band on the top, radiating palm leaves on the base of the main body, and an undulating leaf band at the rim flanked by linear bands. The cover has a linear band at the rim, a connected-dot band flanked by linear bands near the pinnacle and a rediating leaf band at the finial's base. |
