Description |
Highboy, circa 1730 A typical early 18th century Boston style and form; two-part black and gold lacquer William and Mary highboy constructed of pine and maple. The flat-topped chest has a series of moldings forming a cornice which contains a cushion-molded frieze drawer. The graduated drawers of the upper case contain two short upper drawers and three long lower drawers. The lower section has three (3) short drawers. All drawers are framed with double-arched molding. All drawers of the top section are fitted with iron locks, stamped-decorated shaped escutcheons and double matching pulls with ball handles. The drawers of the lower section are fitted with a single pull. There is a heavy broad molding at the junction of the upper and lower case. The case is cut at the base with plain arches flanking a taller, round-headed arch, and the sides of the case have similar arches. The six trumpet-turned legs reach extremely thin diameters at several points. There is a flat stretcher which is straight across the back. The side and front stretchers are incurvate. The ball feet have deep pads. The japanned decoration is not original. The entire surface is painted black and japanned in gold with groups of cranes, animals, flowers, Asian buildings with small figures interspersed with various landscapes. The jappaned surface was likely a 19th century addition. |
