Description |
Rocking Chair, circa 1830. Straight-backed rocking chair with five turned spindles, arms that terminate in carved scrolls. Windsor chair style with carved and hollowed out pine seat, bamboo turned legs, four stretchers, rockers. (Rockers may have been added at a later date) Painted or stained brown. From card: "Thumb-back Windsor Rocking Chair. a Circa 1830 American maple and pine thumb-back Windsor rocking arm chair painted brown over the original salmon. There are seven spindles at the back. The outer two have flatten fronts with an incised band near the seat and they project above the wide oblong crest rail. The inner five spindles taper and have a single ball turning near the seat. The arms curve downward to a simple scrolled terminal and are supported by two tapering spindles. The plank seat is slightly scooped. An incised line demarks the area of the spindles and the front contours of the seat. The raking legs have triple bamboo turnings and the box stretchers have double bamboo turnings. The front and back stretchers are higher than the side stretchers. The shaped rockers are applied to the legs. |
