Description |
Flat iron, 19th century An early nineteenth century American wrought iron flat iron with a wooden handle and removable heating element. The wedge-shape hollow base has a sliding door that reveals a conforming removable iron wedge. On the base, in the interior, there is a grate formed by four volutes. The incurvate cylindrical wooden handle is supported by a pair of iron stanchions. The front stanchion is stamped "I". The rear stanchion has a loop in which the rod handle of the door passes through and is capped by a rounded brass pull. |
