Description |
Shaker Firkin, circa 1840 A two-part flat top mid-nineteenth century Shaker-made American mustard-yellow painted pine firkin with fitted cover and wire bail handle. The circular footed base is stamped with the numeral "23" as is the underside of the cover. The slightly outward canted cylindrical body is made up of twelve jointed staves held in place by two double riveted iron hoops. At the top of the main body there are two truncated top diamond-shaped plates that house the bail handle has a medial turned unpainted wooden grip with an incised band at the center. The cover has a double riveted iron hoop for an edge and it is applied to the cover by seven (7) square faced nails. |
